Description - Complex
On the south of the city of Heraklion and on an altitude of 700 m., in the heart of Crete, in a location of incomparable beauty full of stone-paved streets and picturesque alleys, the Aghios Miron “Traditional Cottages” are found.

They consist of a complex of 2 buildings that have been characterized as protected monuments by the Ministry of Culture, having singular architectural, morphological and technical elements on their facets and interior typology. The buildings are stone-built, and have been fully renovated, using old restoration techniques and local materials from the adjoining mountains, without interventions that could alter their initial character, keeping the location’s memories and aroma alive.

The rooms have a unique view to the peaks of Youhtas and Psiloritis, the sea and the rich local vegetation, which is full of olive groves, vineyards, pines, poplars, cypresses and fruit-bearing trees.

The cottages operate all year round and offer to their visitor all modern comforts. The apartments are three-bed and four-bed ones, fully equipped, with a telephone, a refrigerator, an electric cooker, air-conditioning, central heating, a safe, a living-room with a fireplace, a television set, while there is an Internet connection. All rooms have their own bathroom, hydromassage and a common vapor-bath. The buildings have a washing machine, a dishwasher, a freezer, and a fully equipped kitchen. In their interior, the rooms are warm and welcoming. In the yard, there is an oven shed with a traditional pergola and a well.

The rooms are elevated on 2 levels with the traditional ontas or sofas (small elevated room); they are comfortable with large verandas and a view to the sea and the surrounding mountains.

The buildings operating as traditional lodgings have been characterized as monuments of the modern times by the Direction of Modern and Contemporary Architectural Heritage.

Description - Location, Distances
The great island, the largest island after the Cypriot plane leaf, the fifth largest in the Mediterranean. Its length is two hundred fifty kilometres, its width varies from twelve to fifty two. It engraves the two rival seas surrounding it, separates and conciliates them… Cretan and Libyan Sea. From the West to the East and from the East to the West, you have to come to this place, you cannot escape. A classic passage, an inevitable route for centuries and millenaries…

Travelling in the region of Heraklion means travelling to the roots of Europe, as it is not an exaggeration to say that the history of Europe was deployed here, where the first European civilization was formed, the Minoan civilization, and since then, local history has been directly related to all great historical events that characterised the European continent. During all these years, from the antiquity until today, the peoples passing through the region have left behind the marks of their civilization, composing thus a fascinating accumulation of human presence and creation. During this period the palaces of Knossos, Faistos, Malia, Archanes, the marvellous villas of Tylissos, Aghia Triada and other buildings of smaller size, but also of great interest, have been built all over the region of Heraklion. The radiance of these centres extends to the whole of the Mediterranean basin. Architecture, painting, pottery and goldsmithery reach high levels of perfection.
